Helley-Smith efficiency presenting on 3rd IAHR YWP Congress

In November 2022, at the 3rd IAHR Young Professionals Congress, our young researcher presented innovative methodologies developing at the RISED Laboratory to tackle complex engineering challenges.

This research examined the hydraulic efficiency of the Helley-Smith bedload sediment sampler, focusing on how deviations in its orientation—particularly when it is not positioned on flat riverbed and/or aligned with the flow—affect data accuracy. Field measurements from the Danube River revealed that data collected with a sampler deviating more than 25° from the mean flow direction or exceeding a pitch/roll angle of 10° should be excluded from further analysis to ensure reliable results.
